Flight Traxx 2008
Welcome back to “Codling Moth Flight Traxx”, an IPM service of Advan L.L.C.  This is our 5th year assisting you in timing applications of CYD-X the codling moth population control.

May 13, 2008

Location Biofix
Date
Cone Grove, CA March 24
Central Point, OR, SOREC April 27
Milton Freewater OR April 29
Hood River May 3
Wenatchee, WA  TFREC May 4
Treasure Valley May 5

Weather conditions throughout the growing region have been unusual.  So it is recommended that each grower establish their own biofix date.   We have gathered together for your convenience the biofix dates from around the Pacific Northwest.

CYD-X contains Cydia pomonella granulovirus, a naturally occurring insecticidal virus of codling moth.  CYD-X is highly effective in killing codling moth larvae with no adverse effects to fish, wildlife or beneficial organisms.

The first CYD-X application should be timed to coincide with the beginning of egg hatch, and repeated at 7-10 day intervals when used in a stand alone program.  When applied in a rotation with conventional pesticides, time the applications of Cyd-X to correspond with peak egg hatch.  Egg hatch normally begins at about 250 degree days (DD) after biofix.  Larvae  must consume the Cyd-X particles before they enter the fruit.  So to insure adequate coverage of leaves and fruitlets, thorough spray coverage is necessary

“Biofix” and “Degree Day” Review:
Biofix is defined as the date at the beginning of each generation or “flight” when codling moth adults are consistently being collected in pheromone traps. One Degree day (DD) equals one 24 hours period with a temperature of 1 degree above the lower developmental threshold.  Therefore, DD’s are a factor of both time and temperature.  For example, the threshold temperature for codling moth is 50F, if the temperature remained at 52F for 24 hours you would accumulate two DD’s.

The labeled use rate for  CYD-X ranges from 1 to 6 oz. per acre per application,  3 oz./ acre as a typical use rate.

Following the ingestion of CYD-X, death of the codling moth larvae will occur in 3-7 days.  Death may occur more rapidly under high temperature conditions or higher dosage rate.

Apply at a neutral pH near 7.0.  Do not apply in spray solutions of pH 8.0 or greater as the viability of CYD-X will be reduced.
